The folks over at Nerdist have the 'exclusive' but we've got the Critical Analysis! The new Voltron series for Netflix has an official logo and title! And that titles implies that this probably isn't a reboot of the classic franchise.
Voltron: Legendary Defender
From Nerdist:
Little is known about the series thus far, particularly about the cast and creators, but we do know that it will follow the same classic Voltron formula of uniting five teenagers in gigantic, robotic lions to protect the universe from towering evil. Only through the power of teamwork will they be able to kick some robotic ass, take some robotic names, and stop a terrible intergalactic war.
I remember sitting in front of the TV as a kid, excited to watch the latest episode of the original 'Lion Force' Voltron. While I wasn't as big a fan of the 'Vehicle Force' Voltron, my brother and I still watched as we were dedicated to the brand. As a matter of fact, the 'lion' Voltron had a die-cast metal toy that featured all five lions that linked together to create a fully formed Voltron. Coming in with a hefty $99 price tag, this was the first major toy purchase I ever remember making. My brother and I pooled our money together and bought it. If I recall correctly, my dad paid for the tax.
My favorite member of the team was Keith, the leader and operator of the Black Lion. My brother loved Sven, who was later replaced by the Princess Allura. Lance, Pidge, and Hunk were the other members who rounded out the amazing squad of planetary defenders.
Now, Netflix and Dreamworks Animation is one step closer to delivering a big part of my childhood.
So far, I love the look of the logo and the title pays homage to the history of Voltron. I'm excited to see what Dreamworks does with this franchise, as their adaption of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is very well done. I'm looking forward to seeing character models and robot designs take shape. And of course the villains (King Zarkon, his son Prince Lotor and the evil witch Haggar), who are a requirement in keeping Voltron busy. But, will any of the original characters return?
If it truly is 'Legendary', that implies Voltron has been an established entity. Which leads me to wonder if this isn't a reboot, but a continuation of the legend of Voltron. Perhaps we'll see five new teenagers take up the mantle with the history of Voltron looming over their heads. There would be much story to build on, such as where are the previous team members? How do these five new teens learn of Voltron?
Another thing that stands out is the wings in the cloudy silhouette. Those don't look like the classic, streamlined, jet-wings. They almost look feathery. And the 'T' in Voltron is no longer in the shape of a sword, like the classic logo. They're definitely making this series their own by updating some of the classic appearances. Perhaps this is more of a soft reboot where a new Voltron is developed to honor the legend that was. Will it even take place back on the original planet of Arus?
It's been a while since I've been able to sink my teeth into some solid robot vs robeast action. And I'm very excited to get more information as it's released. Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
